The Wind Always Blows Onward

June 22, 2010

At some point, we all have to grow up, I suppose. As a writer, I can no longer be involved in these type of affairs. I am deeply grateful for all that GAE has done for myself and all of you until today and hopefully will leave at least a small impact on your life, even if indirectly through the music. I want to start to apply for real writing positions, and this can no longer be a stain on my personality to the professional world. I hope that the very least you understand why I am doing what I am doing, and that I will miss this and all of you so much.

I don’t believe that GAE is over. I do believe that publicly pirating music is, though. Within a few weeks, I will be lining up a bunch of reviews and interviews to reboot in a legitimate format. I’m going to keep it simple as I always have tried to. Just a few paragraphs for reviews and hopefully some interviews. As always, it’s just me here- matrocksteady. I understand if you stop coming, but I do hope you’ll stay. My regulars have become some of my greatest friends. I’ve even met a few of you! GAE is never over if you don’t let it. I hope to see you in a few weeks when I’m prepared to give this place a breath of fresh air.

I’m sorry and I really hope you understand that I love you all and how awesome the past few years have been for me spending it with you all. If we never chat again, I hope life gives you all it can. If I see you back in a few weeks, I’ll be more than pleased to continue in our friendship and musical sharings.

Stay posi and get one more earection in my name. See you in a few, guys.

P.S. If you are in a band/a promoter that e-mailed me within the past month about music, please e-mail me again. With things changing, I am in dire need of your bands music and your desire for me to promote it. I also deleted everything in my inbox for that whole ‘start fresh’ feeling. Also, if you are in a band/a promoter and want me to cover you, e-mail me. I want to. matrocksteady@gmail.com

  1. I take my metaphorical hat off to you Mat, for all the work you’ve put in for this. My music tastes have changed dramatically since I first stumbled upon this website around this time last year. I went from thinking I was listening to some great artists, to discovering the true meaning of music.

The artists that you’ve posted here have not always been my cup of tea – but the one’s that have been have shaped my life. The music I listen to means the world to me, regardless of having no musical talent I deeply appreciate and love music for all it’s worth.

Thank you, once again for this magical site that has given me an insight on life, an insight on music and an insight on what will follow in life. I hope we’re able to keep up our Facebook chats etc, because I do enjoy your opinions and help even though I’m from New Zealand.

    Yours Sincerely,
    Stephen Gallagher.

What if I’m in a band and I want you to leak, or “feature” our cd when we have it, that is, if you enjoy it?

    • Of course! Independent bands (as in sans label) will always be the easiest to work with for featuring their CD. I am pretty much willing to cooperate with whatever a band is trying to get done. If they have an idea for me, I’m more than happy to try and make it work. Everything from reviews, interviews and some sort of exclusive, I’m all ears to the bands. Tell all your friends bands, too. I want my inbox to overflow with people saying they want reviews and interviews done so the relaunch will have a nice amount of content.

It was a surprise to read what you wrote. It is great that you want to move on to something more serious, everything change and I think and hope this is for better. People that used to visit GAE can find leaks or mp3′s everywhere on the internet, but what really makes GAE special are the opinions and points of view that we can read here, either if one can relate to what you think or not. I will keep visiting GAE, definitely and obviously I’ll keep in touch via Twitter and Facebook.

    My best wishes, Mat.

    Pato, from Chile.

Ah man that’s not the news I wanted to hear, but it’s understandable.
You’re a good writer and i’m sure you’ll do some great things in the future.
Good luck with everything, and i’ll keep checking the site for any new stuff. :)

    • You have my facebook, Siobhan, so never hesitate to leave me a note and catch up. And hey, GAE isn’t ending, it’s just restarting completely new with all new features- it’s just an upgrade in my opinion. ;-)

  5. qwerty Says:

its been a good run dude i’ve been checking in constantly since pre-wordpress days. you have great taste and i hope growing up and moving on works out great for you.

with that, anyone know any good music blogs (besides strikegently)? :\

    • qwerty Says:

which i’d like to add will never be as good as this site has been. actually i can’t even really call it a music site, although i do love porn!

      • the only 2 blogs that I personally still visit regularly (outside of SG, if you can even call that a blog…) are

        skatepunkers
        soundwatching

they’re both blogspot. the former is as stated a skatepunk blog. All the fast fast fast shit I used to put up I normally got from there. The latter has great selection all around including jazz and indie. It has a super wide variety just like [as i would hope] GAE had.

Mat, this truly breaks my heart. I go on every day to see what badass music I should download next. You’re spectacular and huge stomach for music and all it’s genres inspires me to listen to everything. Music has always been a big part of my life, you only fueled that fire with allowing us all to listen to some of the music we weren’t able to buy, or find elsewhere on the internet. Yeah, what you were doing might be illegal, but in essence you gave each and every single band whose music you posted something that they spend their entire career trying to get: fans. I’m proud to have been a GAE user. Hope to see you in the future. If anything read an article in a magazine with your name on it. I’m sure I will never forget your name. Nor what you’ve done to my ears. Both musically, and sexually (figuratively of course. Just a GAE pun).

Godspeed. And never put down your pencil. Music needs you.

  7. JordanMT Says:

    fuck life.

  8. Sam Says:

I was actually thinking this was where you were going with your blog since the previous blog mishap. I’m here for the honest reviews of albums I’ve either never heard of or didn’t think twice about. I’m still around and will be to catch up with what ya got. Looking forward to all that you have in mind. I do like the idea though of you linking music to the underground sans label bands out there whether to download or link to a download. Those are usually better imo to dl since you can’t find it regularly anywhere.

Really looking forward to this. No hurries mate, do what you love and we all know you love music.

  9. Zach Says:

Well if you post a bit more, I personally couldn’t care less if there are links or not ;) Good luck Mat, thanks for taking the time to do all this.

And probably not the best place for recommendations, but you should check out Red Knife Lottery when you get a chance if you haven’t already!

  10. Ian Says:

Your site was really helpful and I trusted your musical ear and judgment a lot.

I honestly just want some alternative music blogs now.

This was my last one : [

  11. rckildea Says:

As someone just mentioned, I don’t think the links have ever mattered, it’s the introduction to, and opinions of, various bands new and old. I hope this means that you’ll start posting more, like you did back on Blogspot. Good luck, mat!

  12. senselocke Says:

Well, this comes as a bit of a shock.

I can sort of understand your decision, though considering it’s a complete 180, it’s a bit of a surprise. Considering I just spent (like, 20 minutes ago) $113 on CD’s of artists I found through you (albums I’ve bought that I found here to date: 22), I hope you realize it wasn’t as simple as piracy–I would never have found half of my now-favorite music if not for your site. And had I not found it, I wouldn’t have been able to buy it.

So, thanks for doing what you’ve been doing, and I understand (but am still disappointed) at the change. Maybe, with your reviews, you could at least link to clips and soundbytes of the songs in question, because your taste in music has been very helpful for a person like me, who gave up on radio years ago.

    Tootles, stay groovy.

    +1

  14. Zach L. Says:

The reviews and just finding out about the bands themselves are what’s important. Besides, go to google and type in “Band Name CD Name mediafire download” and you can find the links. We need Mat to keep telling us about these bands in the first place and tell us what he thinks about them. I hope you can at least get back to putting new bands up here for us to hear about!

  15. Alex Says:

    Hey man,
I loved your website for a long time and will continue to love it once its back up (!!!). I’m still anticipating that day. Anyway I was wondering if you would listen to my band and let me know what you think? We just did an EP somewhat haphazardly before college but I’m eager to get it out there. The quality could definitely be better… We used garageband… but I think it turned out alright. And from what I know and appreciate about your taste in music and style of reviewing I would love to get your critique of it. In any case I appreciate your blogging and hope to see more of it in the future. We literally just put up the songs so don’t laugh since there are no views…
